Anaya Cabanding’s Guernica was created in 2023 for his solo exhibition Wunderkammer, held at Nanzuka Underground in Tokyo.Anaya Cabanding’s pieces in this exhibition are inspired by Picasso’s work, particularly his portraits of weeping women. These “figures” serve as visual extensions of the artist’s reflections on war and human suffering, themes that preceded the creation of Guernica. To complete the narrative, the Museo Casa Natal Picasso is also contributing two additional pieces from Picasso’s series Dream and Lie of Franco, on temporary loan from the Arias family.Málaga, 26 de julio de 2024.

About Guernica

In early 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, Picasso accepted a request from the Spanish government to create a large mural for the country’s pavilion at the International Exposition in Paris. This commission resulted in one of the most iconic works of the 20th century. Known as Guernica, the mural depicts the bombing of the Basque town of the same name on April 26, 1937, by German and Italian forces.

The horror of people and animals amidst destruction, in a composition that blends references to Western art traditions, the formal discoveries of cubism, and the surrealist symbols Picasso frequently used, expanded beyond the personal to express a collective significance in Guernica.

Anaya Cabanding has faithfully recreated Picasso’s works while bringing his own vision, techniques, and style to the table. Using discarded cardboard as a medium, his refined technique and the striking resemblance to the original masterpieces invite viewers to engage deeply with the artworks. His approach sparks an immediate reflection on the value of art and the way its messages are conveyed. In his own words, he views the artwork as an “artifact” designed to unsettle the viewer.
